Game Ready: Disguising Conditioning

Conditioning doesn't have to be a drag. Want to make workouts feel less like work? Even the U.S. women's national team finds way to disguise exercise in the form of fun.

Get your next practice going with this warmup.

STEP ONE: SET UP THE GAME

You’ll need at least nine hula hoops for every game of tie-tac-toe. In this instance, coach Jenny Levy and the U.S. women created three different tic-tac-toe boards. Have a handful of colored pinnies with different shades. The pinnies will serve as markers on the tic-tac-toe board and can easily be moved from one spot to another.

STEP TWO: DIVIDE INTO TEAMS

Levy began this practice by separating her players into six teams of 5-6 players competing on three game boards. You can adjust the number of teams based on your roster size.

STEP THREE: READY, SET, GO

Set up a cone 20-25 feet from the tic-tac-toe board. To start the game, one player from each team will sprint to the board, place their pinnie on the board and tag a partner to then take their turn.

Keep track of the board, as the game tends to get competitive — just ask players like Cookie Carr, Marie McCool and Charlotte North. For the U.S. women, Levy and her assistants served as judges. Once one team was able to put three pinnies in a row on the board, they won that game. Depending on how much time you have, you can do best-of-five or best-of-seven series.
