Premier Lacrosse League Assigning Home Cities for 2024 Season

The Premier Lacrosse League announced Thursday morning that all eight of the league’s clubs will be assigned home cities beginning in 2024.

A Sportico exclusive on May 3 reported that this was coming soon.

“Moving our eight teams into home cities will mark the biggest investment in the league since its inception,” PLL president and co-founder Paul Rabil said. “This move will unlock deeper, more connected relationships between our fans, teams and players. Continuing to build a global presence around lacrosse and driving our mission forward will remain core to our approach. We’re giving the PLL local love and global awareness.”

The unique touring model will remain in place, though. Eight teams will play in one city over a two-day weekend, with the home team playing a doubleheader when the league stops in its market.

Those home markets have yet to be determined. Beginning June 3 — the same day the 2023 season opens — fans can vote on team locations at pllvote.com and through the PLL app.

According to a press release, the league will pick cities “based on industry-leading analysis, preferred venues, partnership considerations, fan engagement and historical pro lacrosse ticket sales data.” Each location will be announced in the fourth quarter of 2023.

“It’s a big step,” PLL board member Joe Tsai said. “Teams that are embraced by their communities can become a symbol of how to engage, support and believe in something together. I’ve learned that every market interacts with their favorite team and players differently. We’re up for that challenge."

The PLL took a big step this offseason by introducing free agency, and although the switch to home cities creates an avenue for individually owned and operated franchises, that won’t be the case. The PLL will continue to operate as a single entity.
