Dialed In: Your Lacrosse Fix For Wednesday, Aug. 3

Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:

1. The NLL has a new commissioner.

The National Lacrosse League has tapped Brett Frood as its next commissioner. Frood comes to the top professional indoor lacrosse league in North America after serving as the president of the NASCAR team at Stewart-Haas Racing since it began in 2008. He will assume his post on Sept. 1.

2. Team Apuzzo chasing perfection.

Midway through the Athletes Unlimited season, teams captained by Sam Apuzzo are 6-0. When Apuzzo takes the field Thursday, she’ll be joined by her former teammate at Boston College and on the gold medal-winning U.S. women’s national team, Dempsey Arsenault. Taylor Moreno, Lizzie Colson and Amanda Johansen are also captains this week.

The season continues Thursday when Team Apuzzo squares off with Team Colson at 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU, followed by Team Johansen and Team Moreno at 9 p.m. on ESPN.

3. Cormac Scane making a name for himself at the NTDP Combine.

At 15, Cormac Scane is one of the younger players eyeing a spot on the U16 team at the National Team Development Program Combine. But he has plenty of experience playing against top-level competition in his own backyard. Scane is the younger brother of Northwestern star Izzy Scane and Penn-bound and USA Lacrosse Midwest Player of the Year Griffin Scane.

Matt DaSilva caught up with him.

4. Syracuse Sparklemuffins? You laugh — it could happen.

The Professional Box Lacrosse Association announced the four finalists for each city’s team name. They include the Binghamton Bravehearts, Elmira Express (former Syracuse football star Ernie Davis called. He approves.) and, yes, the Syracuse Sparklemuffins. Voting closes Aug. 15, and the new league will unveil the winners Aug. 16.
