Montreat College Head Coach Keith Lohmuller Dies at 48

Montreat College head coach Keith Lohmuller died Friday at the age of 48.

MONTREAT, N.C. — The Montreat College community and athletic department is mourning the loss of head men’s lacrosse coach, Keith Lohmuller, as he was found unresponsive in his apartment on Friday. His passing appears to be from natural causes, and no foul play is suspected. He was 48 years old. Selected as the fourth Montreat men’s lacrosse coach in program history in May 2021, Lohmuller spent time with the Cavaliers for the past two years.
“Coach Lohmuller filled the Montreat men’s lacrosse roster with players who he’d coached for years on a high school travel team before joining the college’s coaching staff,” athletic director Garrett Jones said. “This loss is felt deeply by his team and coaching staff, and we’re lifting them, Coach Lohmuller’s wife and children and the entire lacrosse community that had the privilege of knowing him up in prayer as they process this difficult loss and grieve.”
Lohmuller made his way to Montreat following several successful coaching and career endeavors, including as an assistant coach at Queens University of Charlotte and the University of Colorado. Queens held a ranking inside the top 20 in NCAA Division II all three years with Lohmuller on staff. Under Lohmuller’s assistance, the team also reached the NCAA tournament for the second time in program history in 2019. During his time at Colorado in 2009 and 2010, the Buffaloes reached the MCLA national quarterfinals.
Before his coaching career, Lohmuller played college lacrosse at the United States Military Academy at West Point. The Merrick, N.Y., native was also a two-time All-American while playing at Adelphi, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration management with a concentration in finance. Lohmuller was a captain of the 1998 NCAA Division II national championship team in addition to his three All-Conference selections.
Along with his coaching and playing experience, Lohmuller served as an infantryman and military police officer in the United States Army. After 12 years in the military, Lohmuller was honorably discharged.
Montreat College Athletics asks that you please join in praying for Coach Lohmuller’s family and the Montreat College community during this difficult time. Counseling is available to any students or employees seeking additional support. Memorial service information will be shared once it is available.
